Which Deutsch DT Connector Size Should You Choose?

Deutsch DT connectors are available with different numbers of pins, but choosing the right one isn't always as simple as counting how many circuits you have today.
If you're building a 4WD canopy, caravan or camper, it's worth thinking about what you might want to add later as well.
Start with how many circuits you need
Each pin gives you an individual electrical connection, so start by working out how many connections your setup currently requires.
For example, you might need connections for:
- Work lights
- Interior lighting
- Central locking
- Water pump
- Switch or trigger wires
- Other accessories
Once you know how many circuits need to pass through the connector, you can choose a DT configuration with enough positions.
3 pin or 6 pin? Think about the future
Here's one that's worth knowing when planning your panel:
The 3 pin and 6 pin Deutsch DT connectors take up essentially the same physical mounting space.
So if your setup currently needs three connections but there's a reasonable chance you'll add more accessories later, choosing a 6 pin DT can give you room to expand without requiring a larger mounting area.
You don't have to use every position from day one.
That makes the 6 pin a particularly useful choice when you're trying to future-proof a canopy electrical setup.
Don't automatically choose the biggest connector
More pins aren't always better.
If you know the circuit will only ever require two connections, there's little reason to add unnecessary positions just for the sake of it.
The goal is to give yourself sensible room for expansion without overcomplicating the wiring.
Think about the whole panel
Your Deutsch connector also doesn't need to be mounted separately from the rest of the electrical system.
It can sit alongside Anderson power connections in the same panel, allowing larger power connections and smaller accessory circuits to be grouped together.
