What Is a 3 Pin Anderson Plug Used For?

Most people are familiar with the standard 2 pin Anderson-style plug used for positive and negative power. But you may have also come across a 3 pin Anderson-style connector in a 4WD, caravan or towing setup.
So what does the extra connection actually do?
Why use three pins?
A 3 pin connector allows three separate electrical connections through a single plug instead of the usual two.
The purpose of that third connection depends entirely on how the system has been designed. It could be used for an additional circuit, signal, ignition-related connection or another function required by the equipment.
This makes 3 pin connectors useful when a standard positive and negative connection isn't enough.
Where are 3 pin Anderson plugs used?
You'll commonly come across them in automotive, towing and auxiliary electrical installations where equipment requires an additional connection alongside its main power wiring.
Depending on the system, applications can include:
- DC-DC charging installations
- Caravan and trailer connections
- Auxiliary battery systems
- Removable electrical equipment
- Custom 12V installations
The important thing is not to assume what the third pin does based on the connector alone.
Always check the wiring diagram or equipment manufacturer's instructions before connecting it.
2 pin or 3 pin?
If your equipment only requires a positive and negative power connection, a normal 2 pin Anderson-style connector may be all you need.
If the system requires a third connection, using a 3 pin connector can keep everything together in one removable plug rather than adding another separate connector.
That can make the installation considerably neater, particularly on a canopy or caravan where several connections are already competing for space.

Like any electrical connector, the plug itself is only half the job.
A proper mount keeps the connector securely positioned and can make the finished installation look much cleaner than leaving the plug loose or mounting it through an improvised bracket.
