How to Mount Anderson Plugs Through a 4WD Canopy Panel

Mounting an Anderson plug through the side of a 4WD canopy gives you a permanent, easy-to-access connection for power, solar, charging or accessories.

The job isn't particularly complicated, but there are a few things worth checking before you start cutting holes in the canopy.

Choose the location first

Before worrying about the cut-out, check both sides of the panel.

On the outside, make sure the connector will be easy to access once the vehicle is loaded.

Behind the panel, check for:

• Bracing and framework
• Existing wiring
• Drawers or shelving
• Enough room for the connector body
• Space for the cable to bend naturally

A spot that looks perfect from the outside can be completely useless once you look behind it.

Work out what needs to be mounted

If you're only installing one connector, the layout is fairly straightforward.

But if you know you'll eventually need solar, another power connection, Deutsch connectors or other accessories, consider planning them together before cutting separate holes.

Mark and check everything before cutting

Once you've chosen the location, position the mount and check that everything is level and clear.

If you're using a supplied template, use it to mark the required cut-out and mounting holes.

Then check it again.

It's much easier to move a pencil mark than a hole.

Make the cut-out

How you make the opening will depend on the panel material, available tools and shape of the mount.

Whatever method you use, take your time and protect the surrounding surface while cutting.

Once finished, clean up any sharp edges and make sure the mount sits correctly before final assembly.

Don't forget the gasket

Make sure the mounting surface is clean and the gasket is sitting correctly before tightening everything down.

Fasteners should be tightened evenly rather than cranking one side down first and distorting the mount or gasket.

Surface or flush?

Spend a few extra minutes checking what's behind the panel, where the cables need to run and whether you're likely to add more connections later.
